Human Rights

“WE CANNOT DESPAIR OF HUMANITY, SINCE WE OURSELVES ARE HUMAN BEINGS” (EINSTEIN).

Why learn about human rights and social issues?

The philosopher Hannah Arendt said that the essence of being human is participating in moral discourse with others: “The things of the world become human for us only when we can discuss them with our fellows. We humanize what is going on in the world and in ourselves only by speaking of it, and in the course of speaking of it we learn to be human“ (Arendt).

identity The Power of Narrative

Throughout the unit, we are going to examine how narrative is a tool to break down barriers between cultures. In reading a story, we step outside of the lenses of our own experience and enter the world of another. We walk in the character’s shoes, and the “other” doesn’t feel so different. In this sense, stories have the power to both explain and challenge the status quo.
