Second Semester Course Outline

I. ASIAN PHILOSOPHY: THE INNER QUEST

Students will examine three major schools of Asian philosophy and the impact of these philosophies upon historical and modern thought.

II. THE NATURE OF POWER: THE IMPACT OF POWER UPON HUMANKIND 

Students will examine the impact of power upon humankind. They will examine the powers of persuasion and the corruptibility of man as set forth in Julius Caesar and Macbeth.

III. WAR AND CULTURE: “WE CANNOT DESPAIR OF HUMANITY, SINCE WE OURSELVES ARE HUMAN BEINGS” (EINSTEIN).

Students will examine the impact of war upon culture through the analysis of select works of fiction and non-fiction.

IV. MODERN DRAMA: THE TRAGIC HERO IN MODERN LITERATURE 

Students will examine the use of the archetypal tragic hero in modern fiction.
